El alemán conoce dos tipos de vocales, cortas y largas.
En alemán la z y la "tz" se pronuncia como una ts, la "ck" se pronuncia como una k. La -w- se pronuncia como una -v- española y la -v- alemana se pronuncia como una -f- española.
El conjunto de letras -sch- constituye un solo fonema que se corresponde al de -sh- inglés y no tiene equivalente en español; se pronuncia del mismo modo que la -LL- en español argentino. Suenan igual
las -s- que inicien palabra y estén seguidas de consonante -p-,-t-,-b-,-k- o -g-.
Las -r- son como las francesas, es decir, guturales.
Refiriéndonos a las vocales, suenan prácticamente como las españolas excepto cuando llevan -¨- (diéresis o, en alemán, "Umlaut"). En tal caso, suenan así (sólo pueden llavar Umlaut la -a-, la -o- y la -u-:
- A mit Umlaut; Ä: se pronuncia como la -e- abierta en catalán, no tiene equivalente en español.
- O mit Umlaut; Ö: Para pronunciarla se debe articular la boca como si fuéramos a decir una -o-, es decir, los labios intentarán formar un círculo, pero pronunciando una -e-.
- U mit Umlaut; Ü: Para pronunciarla se debe articular la boca como si fuéramos a decir una -u-, es decir, los labios intentarán formar un círculo (más pequeño que en la -ö-, pero pronunciando una -i-.
El alemán conoce dos tipos de verbos; los verbos débiles (schwache) y los verbos fuertes (starke).
